Maths Mate Term 4 Sheet 8 Question 22

Predict: I predict I will have to use Roman numerals.

Read: Move one match to make this statement correct. V+I=V

Clarify: Nothing to clarify.

Mathematicians Toolbox Strategy: Make a number sentence.

Solve: first I worked out what the numbers were. They are 5+1=5. I saw a number problem like that I could do 6-1=5.

First I moved the vertical line from the + to the first 5 I put it in front of the V. Then I got this IV-I=V. That my answer.

SummeryIt was easy because I know most of the Roman numerals.

Maths Mate Term 4 Sheet 7 Question 23

Predict: I predict this question will be easy.

Read:  The digit sum for 95 id 9+5, or 14.

How many two-digit numbers have a digit sum of 9

Big Question: What two-digit numbers have a digit sum of 9.

Clarify: Nothing clarify.

Mathematicians Toolbox Strategy: Prior knowledge.

Solve: I wrote down all the possibilities like this 9+0, 8+1, 7+2, 6+3, 5+4, 4+5, 3+6, 2+7,1+8, 9+0

Summery: My prediction was right.

Maths Mate Term 4 Sheet 6 Question 22

Predict: I predict I will draw something.

Read: Move one match to make this statement correct. VI+II=III

Clarify: Nothing to clarify.

Big Question: Make the correct sum.

Mathematicians Toolbox Strategy: Work Backwards and draw a diagram or graph.

Solve: First I worked out what the matches meant. 6+2=3. So First I looked at the answer and realized you have to keep it 3. Then I thought what equals 3. I worked out 6-3=3. That is my answer because I moved one of the matches from the + to the 2.

Summery: I drew a diagram to show my answer.

Maths Mate Term 4 Sheet 6 Question 23

Predict: I predict in this question I will have to use prior knowledge.

Read: The digit sum for 195 is 1+9+5, or 15. The digit sum for 200 is 2+0+0, or 2. Find the two consecutive numbers that have the digit sums of 27 and one.

Clarify: Nothing to clarify.

Mathematicians Toolbox Strategy: Have I seen a sum like this before.

Solve: As soon as I looked at this question I knew the answer because last week I had the same kind of question. I worked out a pattern last week as well that is what made it so easy. First I thought back to last weeks question and answer. The numbers last week were 1 and 36. So using my pattern I took 1 number away from last weeks answer. And got 1000 and 999.

Click this link to see the pattern in last weeks solve: http://charlotte2012.global2.vic.edu.au/2013/11/19/maths-mate-term-4-sheet-5-question-23/

Summery: The pattern really helped me in this question.

Maths Mate Term 4 Sheet 5 Question 23

Predict: I predict that I will have to use addition in the problem.

Read: The digit sum for 126 is 1+2+6, or 9. The digit sum for 300 is 3+0+0, or 3. Find the two consecutive numbers that have digit sums of 36 and 1.

Clarify: Nothing to clarify.

Mathematicians Toolbox Strategy:

Try all possibilities that made sense and look for a pattern.

  • Solve: I looked at the question and I worked out that the answer had to be a number that is one less and one more than each other. First I tried 1+0+0, or 1 so then I new that it had to be one number higher or lower than 100 so i tried 99 9+9, or 18. That didn’t work so I tried 1+0+0+0, or 1 then 9+9+9, or 27. I realised then that there was a pattern the the 9 numbers were the 9 times table so i had to go one more hundred up to get 36 and 1. So I did this 1+0+0+0+0, or 1 and 9+9+9+9, or 36. so 9999 and 10000 is my answer.

Summery:

It is good when you find a pattern because it can help you solve a question quicker.

Maths Mate Sheet 4 Term 4 Question 23

Predict: I predict that I will have to work backwards.

Read: I think of a number I double it then add 8. If the result was 40, what was the original number.

Clarify:  Nothing to clarify.

Mathematicians Toolbox Strategy: Work Backwards.

Solve: First I took 8 away from 40 then i got 32, after I divided 32 bye 2 to get 16 so that is mu answer.

Summery: I used division and subtraction in this problem to help me.

Maths Mate Term 4 Sheet 3 Question 23

Predict: I predict that in this problem I will have to work backwards because I have in other problems like this in previous maths mate sheets.

Read: I think of a  number, double it and then add 4.If the result is 20 what was the original number?

Clarify: Nothing to clarify.

Mathematicians Toolbox Strategy: Work backwards and prior knowledge.

Solve: First I took 4 away from 20 then got 16 then i thought what doubled equals 16 and that was 8 so 8 is my answer.

Summery: Every time I do another question like this it gets easier.

Maths Mate Term 4 Sheet 2 Question 23

Predict: I predict I will have to use multiplication and addition because I have had to in problems like this.

Read: I think of a number, add 9 and then multiply by 3. If the result is 30, what was the original number?

Clarify: Nothing to clarify.

Mathematicians toolbox strategy:  Prior Knowledge and Work Backwards.

Solve: First I decided to find out find out what times 3 equals 30 and I know that that is 10. So then I took 9 away from 10. Because you add nine to the original number. And my answer is 1.

Summery: This question was easy because I worked backwards.

Maths Mate Term 4 Sheet 1 Question 23

Predict: In this problem I will have to use subtraction and division.

Read: I think of a number, subtract five and then divide by three. If the result is six, what was the original number.

Clarify: Nothing to clarify.

Mathematicians Toolbox Strategy: Write an equation.

Solve: First I decided to start with a number that i know if you divide it by 3 you get six and that number is 18. So then i put 5 on to 18 which got me 23. After that i decided to do the equation, 23-5=18 18/3=6. so 23 is my answer.

Summery: Knowing my 3 times table helped me.

Maths Mate Term 3 Sheet 8 Question 22

Predict: I predict that in this problem I will have to use my addition skills. Because I have used them in other questions just like this one.

Read: Ian started with the same number of marbles as his brother Francis. After winning 4 marbles from Francis, Ian realises he now has twice as many marbles as his brother. How many marbles does Ian have?

Clarify: nothing to clarify

Mathematicians Toolbox Strategy: Guess, check and improve.

Solve: I had had to just go through the digits for this problem. I knew that is wasn’t 1,2,3 or for so then I tried 5 this is what I did. 5-4 for Francis then 5+4 for Ian. So Francis has 1 and Ian has nine and 9 is not double 1. I tried this with all the digits then to numbers until I got to 8 and I used that system and it worked so my answer is 16.

Summery: It helps if you have a system.
